Scott and Beth got married recently at Seattle’s Kubota Gardens and held their reception at the Palace Ballroom in downtown Seattle.  It was a beautiful day for an outdoor wedding in Seattle.  Beth and Scott were made for each other and you could really see their love.  Beth’s dad, owner of Yockey Communications, had this wonderful tuxedo on with the coolest bow tie.  If you’re ever looking to write a book, talk to Ross or Beth and they will take care of everything from concept to product.  Also, Scott Jones owns a catering company called Elemental Catering so speak to him if you need any type of catering done. To view Beth and Scott’s engagement pictures at the Convention Center in Downtown Seattle CLICK HERE

Seattle Wedding Videographer Todd Kim

Photo by Jen Finch of Jennifer Finch Photography

We had our monthly PUG meeting yesterday at Me Ra Koh’s house. Me Ra, I think, is the next big thing in the wedding photo industry. Actually, scratch that. She is already recognized as someone special in the wedding industry. She was a speaker at WPPI, she’s a terrific writer, she was recently selected by Microsoft for their Pro Photo Gallery and on and on. I’m just glad I know her!

Someone else I’m really glad to know is the person who took the picture above of me on a ferry from Seattle. Her name is Jennifer Finch and I ran into her at yesterday’s PUG meeting. I first worked next to Jennifer when she was photographing Pranika and Aaron’s wedding at the UW Center for Urban Horticulture a couple of years ago. I ran into her again when we did a wedding together at Kiana Lodge for Pauline and Ethan. I was the wedding videographer and Jen was the photographer for both of those weddings. I think I’ve mentioned this before on another post, but as a videographer I get to see a lot of different wedding photographers in action. Some are great, some are okay and a few are bad. Jennifer is one of the great ones in my opinion so if you aren’t going to hire me as your wedding photographer, hire Jennifer Finch. I don’t know what her rates are, but she’s worth every penny!

What makes a great wedding photographer you ask? I think anyone that’s been in the industry for more than a few years has the technical skills down. What it comes down to is attitude and delivery. You have to work well with the clients, make them feel comfortable, respect them, be creative and be a professional. Jennifer is all of those things from what I’ve seen.

Wedding Love Story Video | Seattle | Matt and My

Matt and My (pronounced “Me”) came to us originally to have us record their wedding reception at the top of Seattle’s tallest building, the 76 floor Columbia Tower Club in downtown Seattle.  One thing lead to another and we ended up not only doing the video for their wedding reception, but we took wedding engagement pictures for them, photographed a 4 hour bridal portrait shoot and made not just one, but two full wedding albums!

The video clip above is part of the Love Story we created for My and Matt.  Their story is unique in that they got married 3 or 4 years ago in California.  At the time, they didn’t have a memorable video or album made so they decided to have a second reception here in Seattle with family and friends.  You really wouldn’t be able to tell that they had been married for that long.  Matt and My are still so sweet to each other and I loved editing this video.  The video clips a bit long, but be sure to watch the interview as well as the highlights from Columbia Tower Club.  Some of the scenic footage from the top of Columbia Tower is amazing, although this small clip wont do it any justice.

Karis' First Birthday Celebration

James Sun and Julie invited some of the married folk from ANCC to a 1st birthday party celebration for their adorable daughter Karis. In Korea, the 1st birthday of a child (dol also spelled tol) has always been considered very important and families celebrate it with a big party. Much like, traditional Korean marriages the individual wears the traditional Korean costume known as hanbok for this special occasion. To see the rest of the pictures CLICK HERE (password required).

I Left My Heart In… | Missions and Raising Children

THIS POST IS A COPY OF A POST FROM JOANNA’S BLOG ABOUT WEST AFRICA | RAISING CHILDREN | MISSIONS.  If you are moved by it, as I was, I encourage you to leave a comment on her blog and read the comments left by others. This post reminded me a lot about the South Africa Missions video I created for ANCC and about my own time when I was in Uzbekistan.

I left my heart in West Africa

I had this post on private for about a week trying to search out a quote, or even my own words to explain why.

Why, since I was a very young girl I knew I wanted to live in a third world country.

Why, when Mom and Dad came back from a month long missions trip, and showed me these pictures, saying “We took some of these for you..we kept saying ‘Oh Jo would love this!’ The whole time we were there.” It made me want to cry b/c it meant so much to be understood.

I don’t know the words, but it is in there deep.

After Steve’s parents left our house I went through my journals and photos of the trip Steve and I took to Niger.  I should scan them and show you some of them…

I want to live there, or India or somewhere like that.  I want to see their eyes light up when I speak their language.  I want to wear wrap around skirts, and live in a mud house with a bright blue door, and eat curry, and get involved with the people.  I want to work in an orphanage.. to hold the babies who lost their parents and whisper in their ears about the Abba who will never leave them.  I want the GRIT that comes when you survive in a country like that.  I want the walk with God that comes from daily desperation. I want to have fewer belongings.  I want my belongings to be people.

I want my kids, while they are still young, to experience it.  To be changed because of it.  Deeper, wiser, and more grateful.

To see that life is more than cartoons on Saturday and what Thomas engine/Star Wars figure they want next or when they get to go to the park again.

Someone messaged me and asked a very very good question. ”How do you teach a child gratefulness?” I have been thinking it over in my mind constantly since she asked me. I have asked that question many times myself to other mothers, and would love to hear your thoughts on it.

What if I never live in another country, what if I raise my kids here.  Surrounded by things and commercials who tell them they need more? And what about the “I am bored” mentality among kids today. Isn’t that connected to gratefulness? I am curious what your thoughts are even if you do not have children..you were one once, what do you remember. What helped or would have helped you?

Great Wedding Photographers | Seattle and Beyond

Wedding photographers come in all shapes and sizes.  They also come with all types of different personalities.  Before my wife and I got started in wedding photography, we were dedicated to only providing wedding video services in the Seattle and Tacoma area.  As videographers we’ve had the privilege of seeing many different types of photographers in action.  Most are good at what they do and just as importantly care about their clients.  I’ve also seen a very high ranking (on search engines) wedding photographer from Seattle get very cranky and fight with the bride at a wedding.  That was unpleasant to see, but I won’t mention his name here.

Anyway, I didn’t want to dwell on that.  What I did want to talk about was regarding some of the great wedding photographers in the Seattle area and beyond. I guess I am mentioning their names because in one way or another, they’ve influenced me or my craft.

Locally here in Seattle, the man who said a couple of words and gave me the confidence to get started in wedding photography is John Hong from John and Joseph Photography.  At a wedding where I was providing wedding video coverage, John said to me, “You should do photography.”  He probably didn’t realize I would actually do it.  He didn’t know anything about me or whether I could capture great images.  He just said it and it opened up my mind to the possibilities.  It’s amazing how powerful words are eh?

Some others from Seattle that have inspired, challenged or encouraged me in the wonderful world of wedding photography are Me Ra Koh from Me Ra Koh Photography and Susie Hamidi from Susie Hamidi Photography.  They not only make great images, but have the best personalities in the world which is so important.

If you live in the Chicago area, there are two wedding photographers I would highly recommend.  Bob and Dawn Davis from La Storia foto are not only famous and world class photographers, but the most wonderful people in the world.  Dawn always comments on my blog and encourages me.  Her husband, Bob Davis, is a top photographer in the world recognized by Canon in a very exclusive group of photographers known as Explorers of Light. They are also dedicated to medical missions and being normal people =).  Dawn Davis is also affiliated with Graphistudio Albums from Italy which is one of the lines of wedding albums we carry.

Kenny Kim from Kenny Kim Photography and Design is newer to the wedding photography industry, but one I would highly recommend.  He is responsible for the picture of the bride in the red Lexus convertible on my videography website.  I’ve been following his blog for almost 2 years now and he has a great passion for photography in general and now weddings.

If you’re from the New York area, Tony Yang from Tony Yang Studios does amazing and artful work.  He provided the majority of the images for our videography site as well. Of course, all the images to our own wedding photography business were captured by my wife and me and we’d love to be hired as your wedding photographers too!

Bride and Groom Wedding Portraits and Slideshow

It wasn’t the brightest day, actually it was cloudy and raining all throughout the week that we had scheduled Annita and John’s wedding portrait session. They were willing to come up to Seattle, but we decided Tacoma was a good location for their wedding photo shoot. John came decked out in a white tuxedo and a big smile. Annita looked terrific in her new wedding gown. Her wonderful friend Sovy came and was so helpful taking care of not only Annita, but me. We had scheduled a 3 hour shoot, but barely did 2 because it started to rain and it got dark. We took pictures mainly at the Japanese Garden in Pt. Defiance Park and briefly went to downtown Tacoma near the convention center and the Tacoma Union Station.

Some brides have been coming to us asking if we did bridal portrait sessions before their actual wedding date. Annita is getting married in July, but wanted this opportunity to relax and take more formal wedding portraits so we obliged. Bridal portraits aren’t in our wedding photography packages for this year, but if you’re interested please send us an email. It is typically 1/3 the package price so it’s not necessarily inexpensive, but could be worth it for you. Annita brought her own wedding bouquet, but my wife is bringing beautiful silk bouquets when she comes back from Korea so that should save future brides at least a hundred dollars. Family Portraits in Bellevue | Kang Family

I’ve known Allison’s family since I was in middle school. That seems like such a long time ago, but Allison’s smile hasn’t changed. She is such a terrific person and it was an honor to photograph their family at the Bellevue Botanical Garden.

My wife is visiting Korea for the first time since we got married a year and a half ago. She went to visit our mother and her grandmother, who is over 90 years old and isn’t feeling too well. This is the first time we’ve been separated for so long and I don’t think I ever want to be separated from my wife again. This is a good lesson for me to always love my wife and know that I am incomplete without her. She truly is my better half. We took these pictures together at the Bellevue Botanical Garden while waiting for Allison’s family to come for their family photo shoot (their family photo portraits will be up soon). She will be in Korea until the end of the month and I can’t wait to see her again. The only good thing about this is I am having the opportunity to catch up on all my work. I love you honey and I miss you…
